About Halton

The Borough of Halton sits on either side of the River Mersey and is made up of the two towns of  Runcorn and Widnes, plus the villages of Hale, Moore, Daresbury and Preston Brook.  

The Borough formally became Halton in 1974 following a national reorganisation of local government but links  between Widnes and Runcorn stretch back nearly 900 years to the early 12th century when land on both sides of the river formed part of the Halton Barony. 

The two towns are connected by the Silver Jubilee Bridge at 330m the bridge is one of the largest steel arch bridges in the world.           

Halton is situated at the heart of the North West’s motorway box. The M62, the country’s finest east-west roadway, connects Liverpool and Hull and skirts the Borough’s northern boundary whilst the M56 cuts through the southern boundary.  Within the region the M57 and the M53 ensure quick journeys for the commuter and commercial traffic. Halton is 10 minutes drive from Liverpool airport and 20 minutes from Manchester airport.
